The Matte Velvet Skin foundation is very easy to work with! It can be applied with your fingers, a foundation brush or a damp Beautyblender. It doesn't look streaky when I apply it with my Make Up For Ever #108 brush (my skin looks even and smooth), but the foundation looks slightly better on my nose if I use a Beautyblender. I like to apply it with my fingers too, when I'm in a hurry.
I would say that the coverage is medium, but buildable to full. You can also sheer it down with a damp Beauty Blender, if you prefer sheer coverage. The product dries down to a beautiful semi-matte finish and I love how it blurs my pores!
The formula is very thick and creamy, but it doesn't feel heavy on the skin. It doesn't dry out my skin either, but if your skin is dry or dehydrated I would suggest to use an hydrating primer.
Speaking of primers, I had great results with the Urban Decay De-Slick Complexion Primer and the Make Up For Ever Step 1 Skin Equalizer Hydrating Primer. The Make Up For Ever primer made the foundation look smoother, while the Urban Decay primer made my skin look more matte.

Unfortunately, this foundation isn't mattifying enough for me. My skin is already shiny after 2 hours, while my favorite mattifying foundation stays matte for up to 4 hours. The foundation still looks great after 10 hours (if I use a blotting sheet every few hours) but it looks very patchy and cakey on my nose.
I tried it 6 times so far ; by itself, with two different primers, with and without powder, and with my makeup setting spray. And I always have the same issues.
But I have to say that the weather is particularly hot and humid this week and my skin is very oily, so the staying power should be much better on those of you with combination or normal skin.
The Matte Velvet Skin foundation doesn't oxidize on me, but it dries much darker once on the skin! I included this photo from Sephora's website so you can see what I'm talking about.

Also, I think it's worth noting that the shades in the Matte Velvet Skin Foundation are not equivalent to the ones in the Ultra HD Invisible Cover Foundation.
Out of the 5 shades I received, only one of them (Y205) is the same color in both formulas. All the other shades are darker. I would highly recommend to try it in store first, and let the product dry for about 10 minutes to see the true color.
Swatches on fair skin (NC10-NC15)
Y205 Alabaster is lighter than NW10 and has pink undertones.
Y215 Yellow Alabaster is darker than NC10 (but lighter than NC15) and has yellow undertones.
Y225 Marble is a bit lighter than NC25 and has peachy yellow undertones.
Y255 Sand Beige is slightly lighter than NC25 and has yellow undertones.
Y315 Sand is similar to NC35 and has peachy yellow.
The Make Up For Ever Matte Velvet Skin Full-Coverage Foundation retails for $48 CAD for 30ml and is available at Sephora.

I rarely wear matte foundations but I've been getting a little oily lately so maybe I'll check this one out! I usually love MUFE foundations!!
ReplyDeleteThis one has a semi-matte finish, it looks more natural than a matte finish!
DeleteReally unusual that they wouldn't make this line's shades the same as the Ultra HD Foundation shades! It looks beautiful on your skin. Now I'm curious – what's your fave mattifying foundation?!
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately it's a recurrent problem with many brands (like Revlon, L'Oréal, MAC), the same shade can look very different depending on the formula.
DeleteMy favorite mattifying foundation is BareMinerals' BarePro liquid foundation!
The before and after photos, wow! I recently saw a commercial for this foundation. I'm so happy there's a mattifying foundation line out because I have acne-prone skin to begin with that's constantly shiny!
ReplyDeleteLet me know if you try it!
DeleteMmm... I've heard so many good things about this foundation! Bummer it wasn't mattifying enough for you; but, I think it might work for my skin type! I'm hoping to try it soon!
ReplyDeleteI gave it a try at an event they held but I thought it was a bit too thick for my liking! Too bad it doesn't hold it's matte finish but I think they were trying to go for a more natural finish even though matte is still in the name haha.

Haha yes the name can be misleading! It has a semi-matte finish at first, but my face turns into an oil slick by the 2 hours mark. My skin is super oily though, so maybe the formula is best for combination or normal skin types?
DeleteIs the Makeup forever
ReplyDeleteMat Velvet + Matifying Foundation discontinued? Can anyone suggest me a shade similar to Golden beige(shade 65) in this product line?
I don't have that information, unfortunately. The Mat Velvet + foundation is still available on their website, but it's not available at Sephora anymore.
DeleteWhat shade are you? :)
ReplyDeleteI don't know, I couldn't find my perfect shade!
